Harlem Globetrotters Coming to Richmond for Christmas Parade

Globetrotters set to thrill with special holiday magic
as 2009 Parade Grand Marshals

RICHMOND, VA – The world-famous Harlem Globetrotters will be in Richmond Saturday, Dec. 5, to headline the annual Christmas Parade on Broad Street. Known all over the world as the “Ambassadors of Goodwill,” the amazing ball handling wizards will be on hand that day to “razzle-dazzle” parade goers.

The 26th Annual Ukrops-SuperValu Richmond Christmas Parade will begin at 10 a.m., rain or shine, hot or cold, and take the traditional route down Broad Street from the Science Museum to 7th Street near the Richmond Coliseum. More than 75 units are expected to participate, including high stepping marching bands, colorful floats, flashy cars and more, and of course, Santa.

The Central Virginia Foodbank is now one of the parade’s partners. Food and monetary donations will be collected along the parade route to help feed those in need during the holiday season as part of the Foodbank’s Feeding Richmond’s Christmas Spirit theme.

“Our tradition of helping the less fortunate, especially at Christmas, is part of what makes Richmond a special place,” said Robert Kelly, the parade’s voluntary chairman. “So is our annual Christmas Parade. So we’re putting the two together, along with the thrilling fun and excitement of the Globetrotters, to create a very special parade this year.”

More than 100,000 people typically turn out for the Christmas Parade. To find out more about the parade, go to www.richmondchristmasparade.com.

The Globetrotters will return to Richmond again on Sunday, Dec. 27, at 2 p.m. to play at the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. Tickets start at $21 and are available online at www.ticketmaster.com. Individual ticket information can also be found on the Harlem Globetrotters’ official Web site: www.harlemglobetrotters.com, as well as info on group and scout tickets. The Globetrotters will perform nearly 270 shows in over 200 cities in 44 states, the District of Columbia, five Canadian provinces and Puerto Rico through the first week of May 2010.

Benefits from the Globetrotters appearance in Richmond will be used to help promote the Food Bank’s Feeding Richmond’s Christmas Spirit program.

The Original Harlem Globetrotters have played in 120 countries on six continents, entertaining over 130 million fans and crossing barriers between cultures, societies and people from all walks of life. The Globetrotters are one of only six teams to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
